The Friends of Nursing (FON), a nonprofit organization, was established in 1981 to raise funds for scholarships for students in the nursing program at the University of Denver. When that program closed, FON broadened its focus to include nursing students in baccalaureate and higher nursing education programs at other Colorado colleges and universities. The vision of the Friends of Nursing is to advance professional nursing through student educational support. FON has no paid staff and accomplishes its work entirely through the efforts of its members and other supportive volunteers. Funds for the scholarship awards each year are raised through membership dues, various ticketed events, the generosity of members and supporters, and investments.
The co-founders of Friends of Nursing are Greta Pollard and the late Janet Pirkey.
